Day of the Dead
VIVA LA TRADICION DEL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
LONG LIVE THE TRADITIONS OF DAY OF THE DEAD
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a uniquely Pre-Hispanic custom that demonstrates a strong sense of love and respect for one’s ancestors; celebrates the continuance of life, family relationships, community solidarity; and even finds humor after death. The traditions centers around the belief that the deceased are given divine consent to visit with their relatives and friends on earth once a year on November first and second.
Beginning in mid-October preparations get underway to welcome the souls and encourage them to return for a visit. At the center of this preparation is the Ofrenda (Alter/Offering) that welcomes the souls with food and drink and stirs the memories of the living with pictures of the departed and items they used and loved. The four traditional elements of the ofrenda are earth (incense), wind (paper banners), fire (candles) and water.
The Dia de los Muertos tradition, Los Angelitos (The Vigil of the Little Angels), takes place on November first in the Mexican State of Michoacan. The children are in charge of the ritual.
Their mothers and grandmothers teach the girls how to honor the memory of their ancestors. The young boys help by placing candles and trays of fruit and bread on the tombs, playing musical instruments and praying to their “little angels”. In the evening, the women and children return to the cemetery with new offerings. They stay and keep their deceased loved ones company until sunrise on November second and the second day of Dia De Los Muertos begins.
